Sol LeWitt, Wall Drawing #260: All Combinations of Arcs from Corners and Sides; Straight, Not Straight and Broken Lines, 1976
Sol LeWitt was one of the first conceptual artists to emerge on the American art scene; in this and other wall drawings, LeWitt doesn’t actually execute the drawings himself. Instead, he provides instructions for a draftsperson to recreate, ensuring each drawing is specific to the site where it’s installed. Thus, the piece exists as a conceptual idea until it’s actually executed by someone, and consists of both the idea and form. Even if it’s not drawn out, however, the wall drawings can still function as an art piece that exists in concept form, hence the term conceptual art.
